There is no definitive answer to the question of which drywall ceiling to choose. At the same time, the very concept of “ceiling gypsum board” is conditional, because it is possible to sheathe the surface with absolutely any kind of material equally well, but manufacturers simply do not have material with the above-mentioned accessory, there are only different types of gypsum board differing in size and conditions of use.
The choice of a suitable drywall for the ceiling depends on many conditions, which, in fact, will be discussed in this article.
Plasterboard Ceiling
In most cases, I use ordinary gypsum plasterboards for cladding ceilings. They are suitable for any household and office premises, the parameters of humidity and temperature in which do not exceed the permissible rate. For example, a normal indicator of humidity in the room is considered to be 70%.
Externally of this type, plasterboard sheets are painted gray and have a blue marking.
Plain plasterboard 9.5 mm thick for the ceiling
It should be noted that the usual GCR made from different manufacturers in different variations of thickness (from 6.5 mm to 24 mm). The optimum plasterboard thickness for the ceiling is 8-9.5 mm, whereas for walls the sheet most often is 12.5 mm thick.
Due to the lower thickness of the drywall will be easier to mount to the ceiling due to slightly reduced weight. In addition, a smaller mass will facilitate the overall suspended plasterboard construction, since it will also require less bearing profile for such plating.
Tip!
If the width of drywall sheets varies quite significantly, then the standard width and length of the sheet is almost always equal to 120cm and 250 (300) cm, respectively.
Fire-resistant gypsum board or GKLO has a high resistance to contacts with an open flame, which was achieved thanks to the special reinforcing additives present in the core material.

Fireproof plasterboard sheets are most often used as finishing attic and industrial premises, ventilation shafts, electrical panels, as well as premises with increased fire safety requirements - archives, securities vaults, etc.
If you want to increase the level of fire safety of the premises, feel free to choose the GKLO: this type of drywall also has a gray color, but, as a rule, it is marked in red. There are GKLO with pink cardboard.
In this case, the sheets are also available in various sizes and thicknesses, which is quite important for the ceiling, given the need to reduce the weight of the ceiling structure.
As for GKLV, the material of this type has the following features:
Moisture-Proof Ceiling Plasterboard
Tip!
If the room requires a simultaneous increase in the level of both moisture resistance and refractoriness, a SCRLP should be used - a moisture-resistant and fire-resistant gypsum plasterboard combining the advantages of the two types of material described above.
Different types of drywall edges
In continuation of the conversation about what kind of drywall is needed for the ceiling, it is impossible not to mention another classification of sheets - by type of edge.
Drywall sheets come with the following types of edges:
Sheet-type gypsum plasterboard and PLUK are used more often than others, allowing to seal up butt joints ideally exactly.
So, we considered what types of drywall is and which of them is most often used to finish the ceiling in certain situations. All you need to do is to choose the most suitable material for your case and build a high-quality suspended ceiling from it.
