7 Graphics and Layout 7.1 Graphics and Layout as a form of artistic modeling

Graphics and prototyping are forms of artistic modeling. Modeling (from the French term “modele” - sample) is the process of artistic reproduction of an analogue in material and ideal models. A model is a pictorial or abstract-formalized system, reflecting in material or symbolic form with a greater or lesser degree of similarity, the main features of the reference analogue.

If we consider that artistic modeling refers to the process of pictorial reproduction of the artistic and compositional characteristics of a model created by human imagination, then by graphics we mean the process of planar pictorial modeling, and prototyping we call volume modeling.

Graphics and prototyping become mutually necessary parts of a single design process for a three-dimensional model of a project object. In this case, graphics is an auxiliary tool, and the layout is the leading form of materialization of the design intent. There are other forms of planar and volumetric modeling relationships. There are cases when, at the stage of searching for a project idea, work on graphic sketches and small-sized models with small sizes alternates. Primary images of the object are born in the graphic, in the layout these ideas are refined and concretized, and then checked again in graphic sketches with a greater degree of elaboration. In this case, graphics and prototyping play the role of equivalent in their value links of a single chain of stages of a design search.
