The Romanesque style (it was named at the beginning of the 19th century due to the use of Roman elements in it) prevailed in medieval Europe from X to XI, it developed in the setting of established feudal relations, when in economic, political and cultural life had monasteries. The art of the Romanesque style was strongly influenced by feudal religious ideology.

The primary task of the art of that time was to serve the religious cult, therefore, church architecture was most developed. Monasteries belonged to serfdom. Churches of the Romanesque type are characterized by vaulted ceilings and small semicircular holes; the dark, unadorned interior is shaking and awe inspiring by the power of its forms, expressing the power of the church.

In feudal society, the peasants were enslaved and severely exploited. Large landowners - feudal lords - lived in castles, which, as a rule, were erected on a natural or artificial elevation near a river or a road leading to the estate. From the castle, the owner could control all the surroundings, here he defended himself from enemies, here he was preparing for raids on neighbors' possessions or trade caravans.

Thick walls of stone surrounded the courtyard of the castle.
