Mexican style - colorful colors, plenty of light, a palette of colors of the local flora, bright decor elements and accessories, a national flavor in everything.

General characteristics of the Mexican style

In the architecture of Mexico, shape and color are inseparable. Mexican architects easily create a subtle play of the colors of space and volume. Harmonious courtyards, massive columns, richly decorated interiors and sonorous colors still inspire architects and designers. All this is perceived only in view of the sunlight, the architectural space itself does not mean anything.

The style of Mexican architecture is inextricably linked with nature. Just as the bright red pigment, very popular here, is made from butter and local clay. The characteristic palette is strong and bright colors borrowed from the sky, the moon and the sun, as well as in the palette you can find the colors of various plants, trees, flowers.

In modern interiors, the Mexican palette is closely related to the general architectural design. Considering the hot climate in these places, the line between the room and the open air, between artificial and natural lighting, is erased. The hosts receive guests in the courtyards under the overhanging roof, and everyone can see the open space.

In the Mexican architecture, an important role is played by the flora: shady palm trees create whimsical ornaments of shadows and grace tones, not only on the facade of the building, but also in the interior. Fine fabrics, pottery, exquisite furniture, produced by local craftsmen, are rich in color, rich in texture and diverse, as the palette of colors of the local flora is diverse. The color combinations typical of Mexico (pink and orange, blue and green) would seem to hurt the eyes, but are closely related to the dramaturgy of the general architectural idea.

Mexican style history

The Mexican style originated in antiquity, in the times of the Toltec Indians, from whom the Mexicans originated. Many legends and mystical events are associated with the era of this tribe. Part of the Tolker culture is still visible in the interior design of Mexicans. Of course, other peoples also took part in shaping the style. Later the French, the Spaniards, and the Americans stepped onto the land of Mexico. However, thanks to the Talkers, interior design attracts with its primitiveness and a certain mysterious aura.

Starting from the construction in the ancient city of Teotihuacan (200 BC - 750 AD) huge pyramids of the Sun and the Moon, each of which has its own color (one completely red, the other - entirely ocher color). Modern Mexican architects with an inimitable ease create a subtle play of color, space and volume, embodying them in typical Mexican buildings - haciendas. In ancient times, the haciendas were small ranch estates, which eventually turned into feudal towns, and now have become architectural monuments. Given the local hot climate, Mexican-style followers are trying to erase the line between the room and the open air, between artificial and natural light. Just as the bright red pigment popular here is made up of oil and local clay, the Mexican style of architecture is also inextricably linked with nature.

In a country where endless fields and mountain peaks live together, rich history and distant future echoes, the interior is a rich and unusual side. Since the Toltec era, the Mexican dwelling has acquired more and more new features. The history of the Mexican country knew many conquerors: this was the Americans, led by General Scott, and the Spaniards led by Cortez, and the French with Maximilian. All this time, the national culture passed through the stages of formation, absorbed the specific features and traditions of other nations and, finally, appeared in all its glory.

Now in Mexican interiors, the interaction of modernism, functionalism and art deco is evident (20s). That is why extravagant glass and metal accessories, mahogany and polishing can often be found in the luxurious Mexican interior.

The most significant Mexican architects who were able to achieve the spread of national decor and symbols were Chucho Reyes and Luis Barragan. For a long time they worked in tandem: the first one designed the houses, and the second designed them. In the XX century, the character of the Mexican house was identified by the monumental artists Diego Ribera and Frida Callot. Their masterpieces now adorn many buildings in Mexico.

Features Mexican style

Bright, almost wild colors, cacti, Aztec ornament, striped rugs, the use of natural materials. The color combinations typical of Mexico (pink and orange, blue and green) would seem to hurt the eyes, but are closely related to the dramaturgy of the general architectural idea. The walls have a rough, rough texture that resembles a simple mud hut. Beams of exotic wood, massive tinted board, all penetrated by the sun and nourished with air.

The red-brown “colors of the earth” play a key role in the architecture of Mexico. They, like purple, green, yellow, pink shades are inspired by the coloring of gifts of Mexican nature and are in perfect harmony with the greenery of palm trees and other tropical plants. The blue color of the Mexican sky plays a part, which enhances the sound of orange. The bold combinations of colors to some extent even shock the Europeans. Nevertheless, such bright colors muffle asymmetry, increase or decrease the space, draw attention to details.

In the decoration of dwellings are widely used products of Mexican craftsmen, whose skill is well known and does not fade over the centuries. These include Guatemalan draperies, and Mexican cabinets inlaid with wood and bone. The richly decorated frame for mirrors testifies to the ageless popularity of the magnificent Baroque in the former Spanish colony as, indeed, in Spain itself. As in every style, Mexican interiors have their own “raisins” - these are stairs with many steps (Mexicans have a passion for long staircases and all sorts of imitations) and wooden beams and sheds that are not disguised, but rather put up for public display. Needless to say, in such an environment, even the air is filled with fun, a sense of freedom and harmony with nature.

The interior of Mexico is characterized by the presence of open space and private courtyards. An important place is occupied by the details: rugs made of palm fibers and armchairs of rough work made of pigskin and wood (equipments), bright tile roofs and motley brown stone walls, statues of saints in artistically painted niches and pottery.

The main ideological meaning of the Mexican spirit is laid in color. And it’s not hard to see when looking at baroque churches or modern buildings. In Mexico, it is assumed that if the facade of the house is decorated with multi-colored tiles, then the owners are wealthy happy people.

Each individual city has its own peculiar style. For example, in the capital, Mexico City, the brickwork of red and gray colors is most common, and in Saketakacas, saturated yellow color prevails. In the center of each house there is usually a small green courtyard, which involuntarily returns to the times of the ancient Maya. Most often, clay, stone and wood are used to build houses. Throughout Mexico, you can see many colorful types of roof tiles that are made in the city of Puebla. Structures outside and inside are covered with tiles, and vegetable garlands are always blooming above the entrance door.

It is impossible to imagine a classic Mexican interior without an abundance of ceramics. Ceramic jugs are used for decorating the rooms, and ceramic benches, tables and household utensils are essential attributes.

As a rule, Mexican homes are divided into urban and provincial. Once, back in the days of Cortez, the large feudal estates (hacienda) were the formal administrative center of each locality. Out of such a hacienda, a European colonial style was formed. Some buildings of such estates have been reconstructed somewhat and have reached our days. Here the interior design was due to the influence of Mexican and colonial styles. White plaster covers the walls, and the floor and ceilings are tiled. Sometimes the walls were decorated with Indian ornaments, which was traditional for Mexico.

Such houses were surrounded by a cool gallery where you could see a lot of greenery, chests and furniture in the colonial style.

The hacienda existed at the expense of their own fishing, a significant part of which was occupied by bull breeding. That is why in the interior there were often bull horns. The walls of the galleries had gray-brown shades, and in the center the wealthy owners built a fountain. The ceilings, decorated with stucco, testify to the high cost of the interiors, European tiles were used to create a common image, and windows and doors were decorated with a stained-glass pattern. The rooms themselves were located in suites. A canopy bed and a wooden crucifix are essential attributes of a landowner’s bedroom. A peasant house had only one room and was built mainly of reed or stone. People cooked food on simple foci, around which mats were laid, replacing the bed.

Troye (modern housing peasants) - has no windows. The central subject of its interior is the dining table, on which is placed the TV and the altar, sometimes various figurines. The TV is covered with neat hand-embroidered napkins, and the walls are covered with newspapers. Considering that the lamp in the room is a lamp, there is a danger of ignition. Curtains or wooden boards are used as partitions between the part of the kitchen and the sitting area. Of the furniture in such houses, only massive chairs and wooden shelving, which also serve as a desk and storage place for household utensils. A simple decoration of such an interior can be except pottery, as well as postcards or dolls.

As for the city, here we prefer the colonial style in pseudo-Spanish houses. Such buildings are divided into two zones, the first of which is spacious verandas and balconies, and the second is given for utility rooms. Such a peasant house has a small courtyard and several stairs on the back floor. Inside such a building objects of warm shades (terracotta, brown, pale pink), made by Mexican craftsmen. The antiquity here is reminiscent of small niches with dried bouquets of flowers. The main element of the decor here is ceramic tile. In the kitchen, by tradition, there is a large table, dominated by blue and white colors.

Conclusion

Mexican style may seem fuzzy and blurry. Its borders are sometimes difficult to define. However, if you take a closer look at it, you will catch an incredible national charm, which can be traced in the bends of Mexican decorative ceramics or in interior items.
