Effect of Electromagnetic Radiation on Electrical Appliances

We all know that in addition to the visible benefits, many electrical appliances can imperceptibly harm human health. First of all, this refers to devices based on electromagnetic waves.

All working electrical devices (and electrical wiring) create around themselves an electromagnetic field that causes the movement of charged particles: electrons, protons, ions, or dipole molecules. The cells of a living organism consist of charged molecules - proteins, phospholipids (cell membrane molecules), water ions - and also have a weak electromagnetic field. Under the influence of a strong electromagnetic field, molecules with a charge make oscillatory motions. This gives rise to a number of processes, both positive (improvement of cellular metabolism) and negative (for example, destruction of cellular structures).

Everything is ambiguous. In our country, studies of the influence of electromagnetic fields on humans and animals have been conducted for more than 50 years. Having conducted hundreds of experiments, Russian scientists found that growing tissues and embryos are most affected. "It was found that electromagnetic fields also affect the nervous and muscular tissues, can provoke neurological disorders and insomnia, as well as malfunctions of the gastrointestinal tract. They change the heart rate and blood pressure.

The influence of the electromagnetic field cannot be characterized as unequivocally negative - electromagnetic radiation is used in physiotherapy for the treatment of many diseases: it can accelerate the healing of tissues and have an anti-inflammatory effect. How exactly the electromagnetic field from ordinary household appliances affects us and how harmful it is for a healthy person is a moot point, so it is reasonable to shield sources of electromagnetic radiation as much as possible and try to minimize its impact.

So, all household electrical appliances are sources of electromagnetic radiation, and the higher the power, the more aggressive the field. It is most powerful in microwave ovens, refrigerators with the "no-frost" system, electric stoves and mobile phones. Relatively harmless is considered low-frequency radiation propagating from the mains at home. The field diverges from the wires, even when the circuit is not closed and electricity does not flow through them, but is largely shielded by grounded conductive materials, such as the walls of a house. The magnetic component of electromagnetic fields is harder to shield, but it disappears when the appliance is turned off. The exception is electrical appliances with a transformer that are turned off but remain connected to the mains (TV, video, etc.). High-frequency electromagnetic radiation, sources of which are radio and television transmitters, as well as radars, is considered more dangerous.

Microwave, which is a source of medium frequency waves. The permissible radiation level of the furnace is 10 µW / cm2.

Usually at a distance of half a meter for all products, this level corresponds. But it can increase as a result of improper transportation or factory marriage. Waves can pass, for example, through the gap between the stove door and the case, so if, as a result of long-term use, the door started to fit tightly, the device should be repaired or disposed of.

About the distance at which a person can stay with the microwave turned on is usually stated in the instructions. As practice shows, the distance of one meter and more is enough.

About the harm of such a device as a mobile phone, there is a final argument. The fact is that it belongs to new technologies, so long-term observation is necessary to determine the harm.

Even the World Health Organization is limited to preventive policies, not recommending the use of telephones to pregnant women, children and people with diseases of the nervous system. And, of course, just to reduce the talk time. However, even the numbers speak for themselves: the permissible level of radiation from a mobile phone is 100 μW / cm2 (10 times higher than that of a microwave).

It is believed that if the phone is delivered and sold legally, with documents, then its radiation level will be acceptable. But in some conditions this level increases. For example, when the phone is in the weak reception area (in the junction, in the forest away from the station, in the basement), the radiation power automatically increases, in order to avoid breaking the connection. Therefore, in such conditions it is better to reduce the talk time. The same applies to travel in transport, when the phone "breaks away" from one station and "attached" to another.

As for home radio telephones, their radiation level is even higher than that of cell phones. And the base of such phones is not recommended to be installed in living rooms, especially bedrooms and nurseries. After all, when the handset does not lie on the base, there is always a connection between them, and a small level of radiation can also, but its effect on health has not yet been determined, so it’s best not to risk it. Just put the base in the hallway or at least in the kitchen.

Be careful with the old kinescopic TVs. The recommended distance from which to watch these devices is 3-5 screen diagonals. That is, a standard 54-centimeter television should be viewed from a distance of one and a half to two meters. And do not put these devices in small-sized rooms, as well as in children. And even better - replace them with modern plasma and liquid crystal devices, the radiation level of which is incomparably lower. The same applies to computer monitors.

In residential premises, it is sufficient to correctly position household appliances: a bed and sofas, a dining table, that is, places where we spend a lot of time should not get into their field. This is the easiest way to minimize the effects of radiation: for example, do not sit too close to the TV.

It is better to place a berth not closer than 10 cm from the wall, especially in houses with reinforced concrete walls. Well, if the wiring has a third grounding conductor, you can also replace conventional wiring with shielded. It is better if the wires and sockets are located closer to the floor, and not at the level of the human belt, as is often the case. Electrically heated floors generate a field up to one meter above the surface, so it’s better not to have them under the bed or in the nursery. However, this disadvantage can be compensated for using shielding inks, wallpaper and fabric materials.

Induction cookers generate strong magnetic fields, preferably metal-ceramic cooking surfaces. Most modern models of microwave ovens are relatively safe: now most manufacturers pay special attention to their high tightness. You can check it, if you bring a sheet of aluminum foil in front of the door of a working microwave oven: the absence of cod and sparks will confirm that everything is in order.

For those who work at the computer a lot, there is a simple rule: there should be about a meter between the face and the screen. And of course, plasma or liquid crystal screens are safer than cathode ray tubes. Radio and mobile phones - another source of radiation, which we can not avoid. These are receiving and transmitting devices that we keep near the ear and allow radiation to act directly on the brain. The issue of the degree of harmfulness of mobile phones is debated. The power of electromagnetic radiation of a mobile phone is not constant. It depends on the state of the mobile phone – base station communication channel. The higher the signal level of the station at the reception site, the lower the radiation power of the mobile phone. As a precautionary measure, you can suggest the following: wear the phone in a bag or briefcase, not on a belt or chest, use the Handsfree headset, especially if you need long conversations, choose phones with the lowest radiation power, especially for children. Children under 12 years old without the need for a mobile phone are generally better not to use.

By the way, almost all modern devices are recommended to use from the network, in which there is grounding. Therefore, it is best that the sockets are with grounding. The influence of electromagnetic radiation on the nervous system. The level of electromagnetic radiation, even without causing heat exposure, can affect the most important functional systems of the body. The most vulnerable of them, most experts include the nervous system. The mechanism of action is very simple - it was found that electromagnetic fields violate the permeability of cell membranes for calcium ions. As a result, the nervous system begins to malfunction. In addition, an alternating electromagnetic field induces weak currents in electrolytes, which are the liquid components of tissues. The spectrum of abnormalities caused by these processes is very wide - during the experiments, changes in the EEG of the brain, slowed reaction, memory impairment, depressive manifestations, etc. were recorded.

Effect of EMR on the immune system. The immune system is also affected. Experimental studies in this direction showed that the nature of the infectious process changes in animals exposed to EMF - the course of the infectious process is aggravated. There is reason to believe that when exposed to EMR, the processes of immunogenesis are disturbed, often in the direction of their oppression. This process is associated with the occurrence of autoimmunity. In accordance with this concept, the basis of all autoimmune conditions is primarily immunodeficiency in a thymus-dependent lymphocyte cell population.
