In the modern understanding of architecture is the organization of the spatial environment for the life of human society in general and each of its members in particular. Almost two thousand years ago, the Roman theorist of architecture, Mark Vitruvius Pollio, determined that the inherent qualities of architecture are advantage, strength and beauty. In modern terms, the architectural activity or the formation of the spatial environment is conducted functionally, technically and aesthetically, and the architecture combines the components of the three most important types of human activity - science, technology and art.

The environment formed by architects can be qualitatively different. First of all, it is an environment of artificially created spaces, more or less isolated from the surrounding world. It is represented by a wide variety of buildings and structures, including underground, underwater, mobile, etc. All these buildings and structures, which are enclosed within the walls and fences of space, belong to architecture. Another type of environment, formed by the means of architecture, is the environment of open spaces, not closed within the enclosing structures. These include streets, squares, inner quarter spaces, gardens, squares, boulevards, embankments, specialized and national parks, and historical landscapes. The range of open spaces is very large, the list of their varieties could be continued indefinitely. Landscape architecture is involved in the creation of an open space environment.
