  1. The social significance of landscape architecture

Landscape architecture is the architecture of open spaces, in the organization of which the leading role belongs to the natural elements and elements of external accomplishment. This is due to the fact that the life of the whole society, separate social groups and each person consists of diverse processes of labor and leisure, which predetermine the requirements for the integrated architectural (functional, material, compositional) organization of not only the spaces inside buildings and structures, but also the environment - open-air spaces.

In modern practice, landscape architecture is understood as the development and creation of artificial compositions that repeat or reproduce natural forms.

Landscape or landscape architecture in modern practice of designing urban and rural populated areas is becoming increasingly independent and socially significant and becoming a specific branch of architectural design.

Landscape architecture deals with the important problem of the formation of the human habitat in the conditions of an increasingly urbanized state territory.

The main goal is to find a compromise between the need to use, transform the natural landscapes and preserve them as much as possible.

As a matter of fact, landscape architecture today is increasingly the basis of the human habitat into which residential, public, industrial buildings and structures, transport and engineering infrastructure must be “embedded”.

The concept of “landscape architecture” was first used to designate this type of activity in the United States in the 19th century, during the period of the organization of publicly accessible national landscape parks in this country that preserved unique natural monuments.

Unfortunately, in modern practice, landscape architecture more often fits into already built-up areas and tries to correct the negative qualities of urbanization.

The peculiarity of modern landscape architecture is that the leading role in the creative process belongs to the artistic beginning, invariably based on engineering, land reclamation activities and, of course, on dendrology, landscape science and environmental laws.

It is obvious that in the 21st century landscape architecture will become increasingly important as the most important means of creating a qualitatively new human environment. Special attention will be paid to the artistic level of landscape architecture. Back in the twentieth century, the landscape architecture profession (landscape architect) was recorded in the United Nations International Labor Organization (ILO) catalog.

Meanwhile, in the 21st century, the profession of “landscape architect” will be in great demand also because it is entrusted with the delicate and delicate task of preserving natural, cultural and historical landscapes in the territories of states. Moreover, this task should be solved not only within the boundaries of populated areas, but also in inter-settlement territories.
