8 Asymmetry. Asymmetric composition

  8 Asymmetry. Asymmetric composition

From the point of view of mathematical concepts, asymmetry is only the absence of symmetry. However, an extensive category of composition techniques is by no means covered by this negative definition. In architecture, symmetry and asymmetry are two opposing methods for the regular organization of spatial form. Subject to its own internal laws, asymmetry is by no means exhausted by the destruction of symmetry. Unity is the goal of building an asymmetric system as well as symmetric, but it is achieved in a different way. The identity of the parts and their location is replaced by visual balance.

Asymmetric compositions in the process of architecture development emerged as the embodiment of complex combinations of life processes and environmental conditions. The specific forms of such compositions grow as a result of a unique combination of factors. Asymmetry is therefore individual, while in the very principle of symmetry there is a commonality, a sign connecting all structures that have a symmetry of this type.

Subordination of parts is the main means of combining an asymmetric composition. Subordination manifests itself not only in the ratio of sizes, placement of silhouette and plastic accents, but in the directionality of the system of spaces and volumes to the main parts of the building or ensemble, whose location does not coincide with the geometric center.

In an asymmetric composition of a building, it is as if the complex construction of related processes materialized. Its perception is more complicated than a symmetric system. It is possible to understand the pattern of construction only after seeing the structure as a whole, while the symmetry may become obvious from the fragment.

Asymmetric composition does not impose restrictions, dictated by the laws of form, on the organization of life processes. It opens up more opportunities for their coordination than the composition is symmetrical. Its flexibility allows organically to include a structure or an ensemble in the most difficult environmental conditions - natural or artificial, urban.
